An American scout accused of trying to leak state secrets in a foreign spy agency has been hired as a 22-year-old professional experience outside the cashier at a local grocery store can reveal the Daily Beast.
His professional experience before joining the US National Security Agency was remarkably similar to that of Thomas Fugate, who was just appointed to lead the prevention of terrorism at the Ministry of Internal Security.
A graduate of the cybersecurity of the Polytechnic University of Florida, Nathan Villas Laatsh, is the second national security employee in two days, for whom Daily Beast revealed that he had no practical professional experience except working at a grocery store before being hired by the US Agency for National Security at the age of 22.
Laatsch, who is already 28 years old, a computer scientist with a “top secret” authorization at the Dia Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Virginia, was hired under the latest Trump administration. He was arrested last week accused of trying to transmit sensitive information to the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

When Laatsch was hired for the role with a top secret security authorization at the age of 22 in August 2019, he just stopped working as a cashier at Publix Supermarket at Plant City, Florida, according to his LinkedIn account.
His skills included “providing customer service”, “processing of moderate amounts of money” and “cash register operation”.
It is said that it turned out to be a terrible meeting. Laatsch was arrested last week after a FBI counterintelligence surgery.

Thomas Fugate, who graduated from college only 12 months ago, received a task from Trump to cope with American extremism while leading the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships at the Ministry of Homeland Security, hired as “a member of the Cross Functional Team” at a grocery store more than two years ago.

Fugate also worked as a neighborhood gardener only five years ago. There is no assumption that he has done something illegal.
In March 2025, the FBI launched an operation after receiving a council that Laatsh contacted the GND, stating that “he disagreed or brought in accordance with the values of this [Trump] Administration. “
He is said to have stated that he is ready to share “completed intelligence products, some unprocessed intelligence information and other assorted classified documentation”, according to court documents, quoted by the Ministry of Justice.
He said he was interested in German “citizenship” because he did not “expect things to improve here in the long run” and did not seek “material compensation”.
On May 14, an undercover agent of the FBI advised Laatsch that they were ready to receive additional classified information. Between May 15 and 27, Laatsch is accused of copying several pages of notes while entering his classified workstation, folding notes and presenting the classified information in his clothing.
On May 29, Laatsh arrived in a preliminary place in North Virginia, where he was arrested. The next day he appeared his initial appearance in the Eastern district of Virginia.
Dia turned for comment, but has not yet answered.
