A striking image and video of the “Step Mountain” of Jupiter IO is a concept art – but authentic photos exist

In March and April 2025, Internet users shared a striking image that they claim to show Stale Mountain, a large -scale interest in the moon of Jupiter.

For example, one X user publishes (archives) the image labeled “The Real Mountain of the Moon of Jupiter IO”. Other users also shared the image with similar inscriptions, including one person who just added (archived), lending NASA “open to the moon of Jupiter on the moon IO – Stopper Mountain looks like a mountain straight from a fantasy novel.”

Like the NASA website (archived) and at least one of the aforementioned users of the X marked (archived), however, the image and extensive video animation (archived) on the same scene were both conceptual works of art based on authentic data on a true function in IO.

NASA Jet Propulsion David C. Ale’s laboratory spokesman also confirmed by email that the image and video are the artist concepts created by different data points that are specialized equipment collected as part of the Juno mission. The creator of the work of art received real, raw images of the Steeple Mountain, which appear later in this article.

Mountain Mountain and Youth

According to NASA, the Steeple Mountain – a nickname, credited (archived) by Juno’s scientific team – stands (archived) between 3 and 4.3 miles (5 and 7 kilometers), or 15 840 to 22 704 feet in height.

For comparison, the Everest Mountain stands at a elevation of 29 032 feet (8 849 meters) above sea level. The highest mountain of the earth – measured not by elevation above sea level, but from the base to the top – is Mauna Kea in Hawaii, standing at an altitude of 33 481 feet (10,205 meters).

Image and animation creators that NASA first published in April 2024 received the data to create the two parts of the media from a special Chamber Called Junocam (archived), which captures (archived) tricolor (red, green and blue) and methane belt images.

Juno mission

The Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) created Junocam for the Juno NASA mission, which started in August 2011. The mission focused on the study of Jupiter and its moons reached the orbit of Jupiter on July 4, 2016.

NASA has announced that the mission will continue until September 2025, “or for the rest of the life of the spacecraft.”

On April 19, 2024, a Juno Mission Website, hosting Southwestern Regional Institute (SWRI), presented an article (archived) for the mountain, as well as “almost glass smooth lake lava.” The author of the story refers to Jupiter’s “extremely close flies” as “within 930 miles (1500 kilometers) from the surface” and also notes the many volcanoes of IO and the theory that “Jupiter is probably the first planet to form.”

Authentic Images of Mount Steeple

Searching for a Junocam website on SWRI has deployed an authentic and removable set of red, green and blue images – including the images of RAW Band – showing the Steeple Mountain. Several creators also shared their slightly enhanced versions of sources, which made the functions of IO more clear.

The descriptions of some images of the Juno mission, filming Jupiter and its moons, contained the word “improved”, telling users the full context of changes to the photos.
