By 2022, the German and Portuguese authorities announced that they had a “official” suspect, but did not explain if it was Brueckner.

Brueckner has a history of sexual abuse, including children, people say earlier. The German citizen was first accused of committing sexual crimes against children in 1993, and later extradited from Portugal in Germany in 2017, where he spent 17 months in prison for sexual abuse of a child.
He was later sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in 2005. He is expected to be released from prison in September 2025.
