On November 13, 2022, Kohberger entered the residence of 1122 King Road in Moscow, Idaho and stabbed college students Madi., Kaylee goncalves., Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin to death. He was arrested more than a month after the killings and initially pleaded guilty.
In July 2025, one month before his trial of start-Corberger, he pleaded guilty to four first-degree murder charges and one census of a burglary for a crime as part of a deal that took the death penalty from the table. He was sentenced to four life in prison without the possibility of conditional release later that month.

Who is Brian Kohberger?
Prior to his sentence, Kohberger studied for a PhD at the Pullman State University of Washington. He was spotted in front of King Road’s house 23 times before the killings.

What did Brian Kohberger do?
Kochberger uses a Ka-Bar knife with a lot of power while killing the four college students, revealing documents. While the murder weapon has never been restored, a knife sheath restored to 1122 King Road has helped to lead to Kohberger’s arrest.
Kochberger asked a lawyer during his first interview with police in December 2022. He did not talk about the motive for the crime. Asked if there were words about the victim’s families in his hearing for a sentence in July 2025, Kohberger replied: “I respectfully refuse.”

What happened to Xana Kernodle?
The documents published by the Moscow Police Department reveal that “it was obvious that an intense struggle had occurred” between Kernodel and Kohberger based on “defensive knife wounds” on her hands. Her body was discovered with more than 50 stab wounds on the floor of her bedroom.
What happened to Ethan Chapin?
Chapin was found dead in Kernallell’s bed, revealing the documents, noting that he had a “stabbed wounds” and was “covered with blood”.
What happened to Madi Mogen?
Both Mogen and Goncalves were also found dead in the same bed, the police department in Moscow revealed. Mogen had wounds on his hands, hands and face.

What happened to Kaylee Goncalves?
The documents reveal that Goncalvs was “unrecognizable” after the “damage” of her face – according to numerous accounts by police officers on the spot. She had more than 20 stab wounds.
Were there any surviving roommates?
Yes. Both Dylan Mortensen and Bethany funk survived the attack. The new documents reveal that Mortensen wrongly identifies two of his deceased roommates because of the weight of their wounds. Mortensen saw Kohberger walk around the house, but “he was intoxicated and did not want to believe what was going on.” The transcripts of her interview with the police reveal that Mortensen heard what he believed he was a man to a man, they say, “You will be fine. I will help you.”
Mortensen spoke publicly for the first time during the hearing of Kohberger’s sentence in July 2025.
“What happened tonight has changed everything,” she said in part. “Because of him, four beautiful, real, compassionate people were taken from this world for no reason.”
Mortensen added, “Life is how I worship them. Talking today is to help me find some justice for them and I will never allow it to take it from me. He may have taken so many of me, but he will never get my voice.”
Funk also wrote a letter of hearing, but it was read in court by a friend.
