Being a starting founder today means working with a constant sense of urgency. The watch is always gone – investors want a return, rivals go around and someone else can compete in the market with your idea.
But instead of leaving this pressure to paralyze it, Aravind Srinivas, co -founder and CEO of launching $ 14 billion, used it as fuel.
“You have to assume that if you have a big blow, if your company is something that can make hundreds of millions of dollars or potentially billions of dollars, you should always accept that a model company will copy it,” Srinivas recently said at Y Combinator AI.
“You have to live with this fear and you have to embrace it. Realize that your regime comes from movement quickly and building your own identity around what you do because users at the end take care.”
For the 31-year-old, the perception of this pressure helped him build a multi-billion-dollar AI-powered search engine to compete with the innovation of the Google and Microsoft technology giants, as well as the newcomers to Openai and Anthropic. Tunplexity’s success has even caught Apple’s eye, which, according to messages, spoke to buy perplexity.

For Srinivas to stay in front of the race, he admits that he often sacrifices a balance between work and life.
“I do nothing but work, unfortunately. I listen to podcasts and audio books when I can. I spend a lot of time on X (which is both good and bad),” said Srinivas in Reddit to ask me something (AMA) earlier this year.
While he still takes time to spend time with his family on weekends – and even hit the gym three times a week – he stressed that persistence matters: “Work incredibly hard. There is no replacement for this,” he told Y Combinator Crowd.
“There is a real benefit to the perception of this fear and sleeps with this fear and awakening every day and you feel excited about what you do to build, because it is the only thing that will last you.”
