A family in New York ignites after learning that the person they have cremated is not their missing loved one and that she is still alive.
Shanita Hopkins told Rochester Station Wroc-TV on Thursday, April 17, about the test that her family had passed after the discovery of the man I had grieve for years did not die.
The sister of Hopkins, Shanis crew, was not seen or heard since July 6, 2021. The crews were 28 years old at that time and had two children.
In April 2024, police signaled Hopkins and her family that the remains of the crews were discovered this February.
An autopsy at the time said crews died of drug overdose, with high levels of cocaine found in its system.

Although he had not heard from his sister for years, Hopkins did not believe the circumstances surrounding the death of crews.
“Autopsy reading was traumatic,” Hopkins told News Station.

“It’s one to hear it, but then it’s another thing to actually read it and then [to see] Her name is attached to him. “
The family wondered if the crews had really died of overdose or it was unconsciously tied to a drug. “Your mind is just going crazy,” she added.
Because the body was extremely decomposed, the family did not look at what they were told were the remains of crews. Instead, they had cremated the body and held a lasting service for her.

In November 2024, things turned another upset.
Hopkins received a random message from someone she has never met before. This person shared a recent photo with the crews.
“Mom, I’m concerned, your sister is not dead. She just volunteered at my event today,” wrote the stranger, attaching a photo with the message.
After contacting the police, Hopkins was diverted to the office of Monroe County Medical Review, who assured her that the dental records of the crews correspond to the body they had cremated.

Conflict accounts weighed strongly on the mental state of the family.
“We did the ashes and things, put them in necklaces and mixed my mother with this stranger,” Hopkins said.
She continued: “You can’t regain the moments when the cop came and told us that Shanis crew was found dead out, like garbage. You can’t take away their initial feelings … We can’t bring it back. We can’t bring them back seven months. We can’t get their tears back to them.”

Hopkins said that since then the cabinet of Monroe County Medical Review suggested that the family for cremation and funeral, but Hopkins said they were choosing instead of a lawyer.
“I almost feel that they cannot understand who this is and they wanted to close the missing man’s case,” she told News Station.
As for crews, Hopkins said while their family “can’t force her to talk to us”, she has a message about her sister.

The Monroe Medical Review Office did not immediately respond to the people’s request for comment, but issued the following WROC statement:
“The Monroe County Office of the Medical Specialist uses timely scientific methods for the industry to identify the remains of deceased persons on time and makes appropriate notifications to the families. Due to the restrictions on the disclosure of information contained in the records of the medical examination, we cannot comment on specific cases.”
