If you are something like me, the news that Joan was closing was a devastating blow. I spent hundreds of hours in Joan’s paths, and although I stocked up when I got out of business sales, I will fail to shop there.
Joan’s last places have just closed their doors in late May. But a surprising hero gets into saving some of the loved ones of the cult products from the grave.
Michaels stores have just announced that they have acquired the intellectual property and private labels of JoannS The Joann.com website is now automatically redirecting to the Michael website, which reads “Welcome to Michaels, Joan Fans! It’s hard to lose the store you love. We’re here to help.”
Michaels will bear selected Joan brands in storesExpanding their suggestions in yarn, sewing consumables and sewing concepts with more than 600 new items. This move is part of the greater enlargement of Michaels in sewing stocks and fabrics. The chain does not acquire the physical places of the showcase Joan occupied, but will offer some Joann selling items in Michaels stores.
What is Joann’s largest product that is saved? IT’s the Cult-Favorite Big Twist yarn that is popular with budget craftsmen (Not to mention my Go-to Pard brand). The big twist is loved because it has many different colors and is a cheap hobby option, which can quickly become expensive. ($ 5 on pure yarn doesn’t look like a big deal until you need 6 different colors – and don’t make me run out of the yarn in the middle of the project!)
The large Twist yarn is noticeably softer and more vusticular to work than other cheap acrylic yarn brands that can be scratched. But I will admit that I am biased – I sit at my desk next to me as I write are the Cabot that I made from great yarn.
Beyond my personal excitement (and the good news for masters!), This is a big job for two other reasons.

Michaels is on the move. They recently announced a 200% expansion of their party supplies, trying to fill the hole left by the closure of Party City. Now they expand their yarn and sew consumables to help close the gap left by Joan.
According to the press release we received, sewing sewing search is 39% since last year at Michaels.com. Their extended offers with 600 new products will include sewing machines, thread, interaction, watting, special scissors, sewing concepts and others, aimed at beginners and expert sewing. They also extend their range of yarn by 25%to help feed the tendency to make a crochet, guaranteeing a well -equipped path for fans of Fiber arts.
This is a drama of niche yarn.
The big twist was Joan’s yarn. This is a bold move for Michaels to carry a big twist because Michaels already have House brand yarn called stitches and threads. The large twist and contours and threads were direct competitors in the budget space of the yarn. It is as if Walmart has started selling target brands – this is a certain surprise if you are interested in the niche world of cheap yarn, ie.
In my opinion, Big Twist is better quality. To put it politely, stitches and threads do not have the iconic favorite product, following this great twist.
