Intel historically downplayed its external foundry clients, but on Tuesday, Financial Officer David Zinsner gave us a certain idea of why Intel remains silent to its biggest clients.
During a conversation at the JP Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference in Boston, Zinsner confirmed that Intel did not have a significant volume of external chips. At least at the knot of the process 18A. Zinsner implies Intel will have more customers for its future node on the 14A process.
“We have the traditional pipeline modeling, we have a bunch of potential customers, and then we get test chips, and then some customers fall out of the test chips. And there are a certain amount of customers who are hanging there. So the permanent volume is not significant at the moment,” ZinSner said.
Zinsner has been on Intel since 2022 and has been in Micron before. Before Lip-Bu Tan took over CEO in March, Zinsner served as the CFO with Intel Mj Johnston HolThaus colleague after Pat Gelsinger withdrew as CEO in December 2024.
Currently, Intel Foundry is working on the 18A and 14A production pipelines for chips in the 2 Nm and floor range, these processes will be used for Intel’s own chips. The first, codename Panter Lake, will arrive later this year, ZinSner confirmed.
“We have always expected that the prevailing amount of 18A will be internal for us. We will win customers here or there that will fill in the gaps.” Intel, however, will look for a larger volume of external sales for 14A.
So while Intel may not make many chips for external customers at the moment, a recent report from Semi -sophisticated indicates that it can change soon.
Let’s take a closer look at what can be offered for Intel’s Bachelor’s Business Chip.
So far, several big names have been reported as Intel Foundry customers.
Reuters and Semi -sophisticated They said earlier that Broadcom and Nvidia are clients of Intel Foundry, and Taiwan semiconductor can potentially target Intel change to its longtime customers. According to the same Reuters report, TSMC has also put the Intel Foundry on AMD, but there is no additional news on this front.
Reuters also reported a deal between Intel Foundry and Amazon to make a custom chip.
One of the few official confirmed partners with Intel Foundry is Microsoft, who announced a partnership with Intel Foundry in February last year.
Although not all these rumors and transactions have been confirmed, they show a potential change in the silicon market that gives some credibility to Semi -sophisticatedIntel Foundry’s latest report.
This new report, published on Monday, suggests that Apple may be the latest customer of the cast, since TSMC, the current Apple manufacturing partner, is related to the capacity for advanced packaging.

Zinsner’s direct reading comments suggest that many of the customers of Intel’s external foundry have not yet completely switched the production lines for their chips.
However, these external personalized chips may be in test or negotiate the exact details of the agreement.
In the end, Zinsner said that the bigger part of the Intel Foundry 18A process will be sold internally to Intel, while 14A is expected to have a wider spectrum of external waffle sales.
But if the rumors of the maximum capacity of TSMC are true, combined with the continuously displaced US tariffs for the production of foreign production, the Intel Foundry can be a more attractive option than ever for the production of silicon.
TSMC is still not out of the chip game. It is reported to work on 2 Nm and smaller silicone waffles that are expected to be used in the coming generations of silicon of apples.
So, even if a company like NVIDIA or Apple had to transfer production from TSMC to Intel Foundry, we probably won’t see these chips for several generations. This is in line with Zisner’s comments on Tuesday for the production of foundry. The Intel 14A process is expected to hit commercial production in 2027, which is also when the Intel Foundry is ready to break evenly.
This can be potentially thanks to external customers. And that would coincide with the next major NVIDIA launches (RTX 60-series) or Apple Silicon (M7).
Intel has been maintaining its foundry cards near its breasts for years, so we will probably only know the details after the chips are ready for production or agreements on SEC.
